Valve’s Gabe Newell has been nothing if not outspoken about his disdain for the PlayStation 3, but he also feels apologetic to those PlayStation 3 owners who he feels the company hasn’t supported. In a GameTrailers TV interview, he made some frank comments about their shortcomings.
“If you look at the customers that I feel we’ve done the worst job taking care of, it’s the people who bought [The Orange Box ] on the PS3,” Newell said, “and that’s a source of frustration. Those are people I have trouble saying anything other than, ‘yeah, I’m sorry, you have a legitimate beef with us.’”
He goes on to explain the reasons behind the poor support. “That grew out of how that product was developed. We didn’t have in-house resources to do updates and deliver the same content we’ve been delivering to PC and Xbox.” Though the Xbox 360 hasn’t been receiving the regular updates of the PC, it’s a far cry from the total lack of support the PlayStation 3 received for its buggy version of the game. Despite the pangs of guilt, though, Newell says they aren’t working on PS3 “in any real way” right now.
